New Year's is a good a time as any for predictions. Really, I'm partial for Tuesdays in March, but heck, why not predict what will happen in the world of single use disposables in 2012 and beyond. After all the reading and writing we've done surrounding this topic over the last several months, a few trends have started to emerge. So, based on my loads of empirical evidence (read: my gut), here's the good, the bad, and the ugly of what I think will happen in 2012 with single use disposables.
At the risk of coming off terribly scrooge-like, I want to start off by saying that I'm very much pro-holiday season and pro-giving and pro-Christams cookies. And you know what? I'm also very much pro-commerce and pro-business, and fully appreciate that the holidays are a big part of the American economy, and that many people's jobs do, in fact, depend on it. My own day job is in eCommerce.
Every year, American hotels throw away 800 million almost-full bars of soap. You know the drill--you wake up in the morning away from all the hustle and bustle of your regular life, peel off the paper wrapper on that bar of soap in the tub, and leave it there. Then, just like magic, there's a new one when you come back at the end of the day. Housekeeping has destroyed the old one because after one use, it's naturally no longer of any use to you any more.
That is a dumb thing we do.
A little bit of SUDs fun on The Office.
I love a good PSA. Famous people using their platforms as forces of good in this world makes celebrity culture worthwhile. And it's really great to see single use disposables as the topic of a PSA. This video was donated to the Plastic Pollution Coalition by the top finalists from American Idol's last season, and its brilliant. Few things are more pop culture-relevant than Idol, and few things get less attention from pop culture than single use disposables.
Who is super excited about their new water bottle? Me. That's right. I'm so excited about my newest water bottle that I took pictures to post on the internet.
